Dr. Juan J. Loor is Professor of Animal Sciences and Nutritional Sciences at University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He earned a BS degree from the University of California, Davis, and MS and PhD degrees from Virginia Tech. He is an internationally-recognized leader in the application of functional genomics and bioinformatics to study lactation physiology in livestock. Work from Dr. Loor and his mentees has established the foundation for research in the field of Lactation Genomics. While Dr. Loor’s research focus extends beyond Lactation Genomics, the majority of the 13 MS students, 21 PhD students, five post-doc fellows, and a combined 71 visiting students and professors he has mentored since 2005 have trained in a topic related to lactation physiology, including milk component synthesis regulation, mammary immune and antioxidant systems and mammary development. Since joining the faculty at Illinois in 2005, work from Dr. Loor’s group in those areas has resulted in over 160 scientific papers garnering more than 5,000 citations.
