Lee Southern, ASAS Fellow: Research Category

Dr. Lee Southern, a native of North Carolina, received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in at NCSU, followed by a Ph.D. in Animal Science (Nutrition) at the University of Illinois. Southern joined Louisiana State University (LSU) in 1982, and he recently retired after 30 years of meritorious service. Dr. Southern’s research has maintained three foci during his career: minerals, amino acids, and nutritional interactions with health/disease. Each of these areas was often investigated utilizing both pigs and poultry. His service to the society and to the animal and feed industry will long be remembered. He served as Associate Editor and Section Editor of both Poultry Science and the Journal of Animal Science. He recently served as the chairman of the 11th Revision Committee for the Swine Nutrient Requirements, which will be known world-wide as the Swine NRC (2012). Dr. Southern has been recognized by ASAS with the 1997 AFIA Nonruminant Nutrition Award, as well by the Poultry Science Association with the 2010 AFIA Poultry Nutrition Award. </p>
