Dr. Gary Hartnell was raised on a Wisconsin livestock farm. He received his BS degree from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. He furthered his education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he received his MS and PhD in Dairy Science with minors in Bacteriology and Biochemistry. He began his industry work with Wayne Feeds (Division of Continental Grain) where he lead research and provided technical services for beef and dairy sectors. Hartnell joined Monsanto in 1983 as an Animal Nutritionist and continues to this day at Monsanto. During this time he has successfully overseen global research involving 1) nutrition studies with all farm animals and aquaculture being fed genetically modified crops or commodity co-products; 2) studies pertaining to milk quality and milk processing characteristics experiments as they involve bovine somatropin; 3) studies with grain and forages pertaining to feeding characteristics across farm animals. As a Senior Fellow at Monsanto, Hartnell develops strategies based on sound science for acceptance of biotech crops and their co-products. These studies are used by regulatory authorities, industry and consumer acceptance globally. Hartnell has authored or co-authored over 100 abstracts, 77 scientific journal articles, 9 book chapters and more than 120 popular press articles. Dr. Hartnell is one of the most respected authorities on the sound science-based research pertaining to genetically engineered plants fed to animals.</p>
